Technology News: XWave iPhone App Uses Brainwaves to Control Activities

Technology is advancing quickly. New developments in technology now allow people to use all kinds of devices  for pleasure and for work. And now, the new XWave app has been developed that uses brainwaves to perform on-screen actions such as levitating a ball on the computer screen.
The XWave iPhone app is interesting indeed. To use it you wear a headset on the forehead and plug it into an iPhone jack. Your brain waves are then changed into digital signals which are shown in a range of colors on your iPhone screen, notes the Daily Mail. The new program may also be used with the iPad and iPod.
The XWave was created by PLX Devices. It was based on existing technology used to treat seizures and epilepsy. This new app may someday have medical uses too.
Paul Lowchareonkul, creator and CEO of PLX Devices stated “The human brain is the most powerful, complex thing in the universe and for the first time, we’re able to harness its amazing powers and connect it to everyday technology. With the development of third-party apps, the potential for innovation is limitless,” notes CyberMedia.
This app will let you have your brainwaves work to control activities on a computer screen. It also helps users keep track of and control their attention span and monitor relaxation levels, notes the Daily Mail.
The advances in technology in the past ten years are amazing. The younger generation is growing up taking all this technology for granted. What advances will the next ten years bring? It is hard to imagine, but someday technology will be more advanced, cheaper and utilized by many more people.

Google and Facebook join warnings over future of the web

Web addresses could run out as soon as November and to raise public awareness Google and Facebook will switch their websites to a new system for one day in June.

On June 8, Google, Facebook, Yahoo and a host of other leading web companies will turn on a new way of running web addresses. The system, called IPv6, is designed to stop the world running out of the web addresses that underlie the locating of websites and devices. Currently, just 0.2 per cent of web users have access to the new protocol, however. 'World IPv6' Day is designed to encourage its adoption.
Vint Cerf, one of the web’s founding fathers, is leading a global campaign to encourage web service providers and IT managers to switch from the current system, IPv4, to IPv6. The new standard offers many trillions of new web addresses, but cannot be accessed from modems and routers that only use IPv4. It is likely, however, that most of the changes needed will take place without consumers losing access to any part of the web because they will be part of the standard software and hardware upgrade cycle.
The availability of new web addresses will, it is hoped, allow more connected devices, such as tablet computers, as well as permitting more mundane devices to gain web addresses. Mr Cerf gave the example of a cork in a wine bottle using a web address to tell its owner when the optimal time to drink it is and its location.
Writing on the Google Blog, Network Engineer Lorenzo Colitti said that “Google has been supporting IPv6 since early 2008, when we first began offering search over IPv6. Since then we’ve brought IPv6 support to YouTube and have been helping ISPs enable Google over IPv6 by default for their users. On World IPv6 Day, we’ll be taking the next big step. Together with major web companies such as Facebook and Yahoo!, we will enable IPv6 on our main websites for 24 hours.”
He added, however, that “Our current measurements suggest that the vast majority (99.95%) of users will be unaffected. However, in rare cases, users may experience connectivity problems, often due to misconfigured or misbehaving home network devices.

Happy birthday, Wikipedia

OtterBox Defender Case for iPhone 4 (Black)

Founder Jimmy Wales reminisces about Wikipedia's entrance into the world in the above video.

Wikipedia critics never would have expected to see the user-generated online encyclopedia make it to 10 years, much less become the fifth-most-visited website on the Internet. Why, they wondered, would anyone want to search for information a on site with unreliable sources? What the critics underestimated is how much Web users would want to interact with the content -- that it would become as appealing to contribute to the knowledge base with both facts and corrections as it would be to search for information. (Users police the site and write in when they've noticed an error.) What makes Wikipedia so successful is the very factor that's given Facebook an edge: reader engagement.
On the occasion of Wikipedia's 10th birthday Saturday, Opinion contributor Timothy Garton Ash has written an Op-Ed for Friday's pages to celebrate the site:
What is extraordinary about this free encyclopedia, which contains more than 17 million articles in more than 270 languages, is that it is written, edited and self-regulated almost entirely by unpaid volunteers. […] More than any other major global site, Wikipedia still breathes the utopian idealism of the Internet's heroic early days. Wikipedians, as they style themselves, are men and women with a mission. That mission, upon which they boldly go, is summed up in this almost Lennonist (that's John, not Vladimir) sentence from the man they all refer to as Jimmy: "Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge."
Ethan Zuckerman, co-founder of Tripod.com and founder of Geekcorps, also wishes Wikipedia a happy birthday. From the Atlantic:
Wikipedia is a victory of process over substance. The larval encyclopedia Reagle has recreated wouldn't have been worth translating, or even preserving. But the process and ruleset that allowed contributors to explore and document their passions, to improve each other's efforts, to debate editorial decisions within the platform and to roll back errors and vandalism have allowed for constructive, collaborative effort that has, over time, created profoundly content. Wikipedia's victory was getting the rules -- and importantly, the rules for making rules -- right, and trusting that the process would lead to substance. The project is far from perfect -- it's incomplete, inaccurate in places, subject to the systemic biases that come from participation of some authors and not others. But it's also one of the wonders of the world, and something anyone who studies sociology, politics, or organizational theory should look upon with utter fascination.
And here's Monica Hesse from The Washington Post:
It simply is, an omnipresent fact of modern living, like Facebook or Betty White. The accuracy debate is the most important but in some ways less interesting discussion about Wikipedia's impact. What's most revealing might be not the vastness of the articles and the things they get wrong, but rather how they reveal what things we care about, and how humanity is both better and dumber than you ever would have expected.
So, what's next for Wikipedia? Wales would like even more reader engagement, and world domination.

Can you imagine the tomorrow’s world full of «green» waste under the pretext that Mother Nature will do the work?
That’s why today’s designer can be more like an “ecological father” of new ideas, for the next coming generations. Envi, is a foresight urban dustbin, promoting composting from biodegradable waste. The project is based on a social approach. It shows the benefits that we can take from urban recycling. It makes waste into nutritious compost for the plant which it carries and lives in harmony with. The big part of the produced compost can be separated from Envi for usage in other occasions.

BendDesk

For most people from many different disciplines a desk is the main workspace. A typical desk is composed of at least one or more vertical displays that show digital content and a larger horizontal area, containing input devices, such as mouse and keyboard, paper-based documents, and everyday objects. These two areas are clearly separated which makes it hard to move documents from one surface to the other. Furthermore, each area employs a different interaction technique. For example, we use the mouse for drawing on vertical displays but physical pens to annotate paper-based documents. BendDesk is our vision of a future workspace that allows continuous interaction between both areas.

    Watches TokyoFlash!

TokyoFlash came up with a new interesting watch concept. I think it’s a little bit difficult to read the hours, you need some time to get used to it. The hours are displayed in digits as empty spaces at the center of the display. The minutes are shown by those blocks surrounding the digits, there are small markings to help you read it easier. There are 2 buttons on the watch, top and bottom. The light up function is activated when you press one of them and the other one is to setup the time. Pretty simple, yet pretty hard to read. Would you buy this product?

Innovation in Sports Technology – Digital referee

    Сoncept – Tempdot faucet

Now you too can get all of your temps in dot form! Yay! This concept is a faucet and it’s name is “Tempdot.” The quick and simple reasoning for this is that there’s dots on top of the faucet, dots that both activate the water flow and control the temperature of that water at the same time. Simply drag your finger across the neck of this lovely lady, lift where you want the temperature to reach, and wait for water! To turn off again, just a little bump will do.
The alternate title of this post is Dots of Ice. That’s because these dots can deliver either. Made by a repeat designer here at Yanko, Jaeseok Han, this faucet is simple, nice to look at, and to me it seems pretty reasonable. It reduces the amount of metal that’s got to be used, and the lights on top are said to be recharged by the hot water flow through the system. How nice? How nice.

The Led Galaxy is a streetlamp that is designed to address this issue by bringing the stars on the ground through powerful LEDs, making an artificial galaxy that can make people comfortable and remind about the nature again. The idea features a brighter reverberator than the conventional one, making more recognizable stars as a galaxy under the streetlight. The lack of bright illumination is addressed by passing the light through the transparent bio-basin coating. One of the major benefits of having gadgets is that it constantly connects us to the world and what’s happening in it. Though these technological devices have allowed us to interact with data from anywhere we choose, there isn’t a unique delivery system for the information they’re delivering especially when “news” is concerned. The printed versions of newspapers can offer mobility, much like a device, but access to content can be cumbersome in certain reading situations. How do we combine the affordances of print and online versions of news and translate that hybrid into a single device? A medium that conforms to human practices and the varied scenarios of accessing news.

The proposed material is flexible and resistance, so that safety issues could be dealt with efficiently. Further material needs to be shape retaining and non-conductive and non-allergic and most important, heat resistant. All these aspects have been considered by designer and he suggests promising bioplastic material to ensure all these aspects.
